To Miss M. F. Marshall

Dear Mary,

I seat myself this morning to pen you a few lines which afford me much pleasure. Mary I am so disappointed I was looking for you to come. I want to see you so bad I can hardly content myself. I am very proud of the bouquette and I shall keep it forever if I can possible you may depend. I was very very sorry to hear of Mr. Marshall’s departure and Mary when you write to him tell him to write to his friend Lou. Now don’t forget it. I brought a bouquette over here this morning for you. I shall send it by Mr. Marshall. It will be very much withered I expect. I wish it was so I could send one in return for the one I got the other day. You must come as soon as you can and Emily can come over most any time or you and John can come some Saturday and stay all night with me. Mary you must send Tom H to the army as all of the rest of the young men has to go it will never do for him to stay. If you don’t I will coe over with a company of girles and run him off. Mary the report is that we all have to take that awful oath next week. What shall we do submit or not it is hard. Some of the women who has husbands in the southern army prefers going to Dixie if they are allowed that privilege. But as I have none I would like to stay here a while longer at any rate. You will laugh at this scribbling. I have no doubt it needs to be laughed at but my pen is so bad I can hardly make a mark but you must excuse all that is wrong and believe me your true friend
