Miss Mary:
Dear friend,
Doubtless you will be somewhat surprised when you receive “this uninteresting epistle” but let that be as it may, I will write to you anyhow it being the first I hope it will not be the less welcome.
Well Mary I am staying with godmother as she is verry sick and has been ever since she returned from Sedalia. She is not much better than she was when Aunt Sallie left. Some days she is a great deal better then averse. I think it will be a good while before she gets out of bed again. She cannot sit up any. I have been up here for two weeks and Aunt Manda has been looking for her mother every evening and she says she is getting mad and I don’t blame her for I think she might come she is making grape preserves today. Little Bobbie is crying. Oh! Mary he is such a sweet child, he is so large and pretty. He is not so bad as he used to be, I mean he don’t cry so much. He is not so bad spoiled. Amanda whips him a little sometimes. Uncle John is not very well, but he has been so hard at work with his tobacco, it is a great wonder he is not sick. I believe he has it all put away safely. Well Mary I went to church yesterday about 7 miles from here, Uncle Reece (Reese) & Jo and Oh, you better believe I saw my sweetheart. Yes and he came home with me, but had to go back immediately on account of a sick patient (he is a Doctor) just beginning to practice you bet he is prettie too. I thought I was not going to get to see him but he came while they were baptizing. It was a protracted meeting and had been going on nearly two weeks, there were ten or twelve immersed (the Smiths were Baptist - my mother’s note). The meetings were close to my Sweet heart’s Pa’s. Mary come down and you shall have the pleasure of meeting him, for I know that would be a pleasure if he is here, he is talking of going off. I don’t know whether he will or not. I want to come up to Uncle Henry’s this winter and stay a while. I don’t know whether I will or not. Aunt Manday says tell you her and I will come up soon. She is still looking for your mother every day. She says tell John the School is going on and he had better come and go, he is a good teacher. I presume I have written enough so I will close by asking you to remember me kindly to all the family, and all my friends, give my love to Uncle H and Aunt Sallie tell them we are all well except Gramma and I have told you how she is. Well Mary you must write soon and tell me all the news with love to all I remain your friend and “may the snowy wings of bright angels watch over you till death, good bye
Mollie Smith
